Add Comment Opportunity for an Artist/Film Maker 04/01/2012
Opportunity for an Artist/Film Maker Art Asia is looking for a local artist/film maker to create a short artistic film inspired by an exciting project entitled ART to DANCE, for inclusion in an exhibition at the Southampton City Art Gallery in Autumn 2012. Inspirational works have been selected from Southampton City Art Gallery’s collection by Mayuri Boonham, a leading British exponent of South Asian Dance, and will be on display throughout January and then again in the Autumn. A weekend programme of workshops, talks and sharings by international artists exploring the creative connections between visual art and dance will run alongside the exhibition in January. In February half term talented young dancers will create a new dance piece inspired by the exhibition. We wish to commission an artist/film maker to create a film which uses the dance project as a starting point, but which takes a very creative approach and is inspired by the ART to DANCE theme of creative connections between visual art and dance. We do not want a documentary record of the project, but a piece of film art which will be shown in the Autumn when the exhibition returns to the gallery. ART to DANCE is part of Art at the Heart – a partnership between Southampton’s arts organisations and the City Council to bring exciting events and projects to Southampton’s emerging Cultural Quarter. You will need to be free to attend the ART to DANCE weekend programme on 28th-29th January and the half term dance project 16th – 18th February. There is a fee of £500 payable to the artist to cover their costs. About Art Asia We have been working since 1981 to promote and develop high quality South Asian arts across the Southern region. Last night at Solent University we had a Short Film Special screening. This event was programmed with short films and other work from some very talented Women in Film. Solent University Lecturer, Darren Kerr was joined by the female filmmakers for a Q&A Session after all films had been shown. The filmmakers ranged from professional award winning and experienced filmmakers to those just starting out, all with different styles and views on short film. Local Filmmakers, Alys Scott-Hawkins and Sharon Holloway, shared their individual work and discussed why they choose to and prefer to make short films. BAFTA award winner Hilary Durman, who has previously worked on film shorts such as Channel 4’s The Shooting Party, brought with her a trailer and clips from her documentary, Donor Unknown (which has been nominated for a Grierson award for best documentary on a contemporary theme) and post graduates Yasmin Foster and Laura Greene shared with us their short documentary, Farm Vets, and their hopes for the future. Thank you to all the filmmakers, solent university and all in attendance for this amazing event.
