Documentary Filmmakers - 7 Days left to submit your films!
Southampton Film Week’s annual film competition SFW: Shorts will close for submissions of short films to this year’s competition on Friday 28th September 2018. SFW: Shorts is an open competition, short films of all styles, genres & techniques from filmmakers of all levels of experience are accepted.
The Best Documentary category is for non-fiction (factual) short films of any theme or style including animation, live action, talking heads, expository or reflective documentaries. Southampton Film Week has always had a strong relationship with documentary film. In fact the first ever winner at SFW: Shorts 2012 was awarded to artist and filmmaker Anna Cady for her film ‘30% (Women and Politics in Sierra Leone)’ which was subsequently selected in the Short Documentary Film category for Sundance and includes the glorious painted animations of Em Cooper (Kiss the Water). Documentary has continued to do well at SFW: Shorts including last year’s Best Documentary winner ‘A Name That I Admire’ by Sam Smarrt which also received the Michael Fuller Award for Best Film.
SFW: Shorts also has submission categories for Best Artists’ Moving Image and Best Fiction. All shortlisted films will be eligible for the Michael Fuller Award for Best Film selected by our panel of judges and the Audience Award voted for at the screening and awards ceremony during the festival. *Filmmakers from Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey, West Sussex and Isle of Wight will also be in contention for the Southampton Solent University sponsored Regional Filmmaker Prize and can submit at the earlybird entry fee!
