The R&B Feeling
Director: Nathaniel Mellors, Marcus Werner Hed Language: English 70 mins Not suitable for children We are delighted to be opening Southampton Film Week 2015 with this fascinating new documentary about local performance artist Bob Parks. The R&B Feeling is a film about the eccentric artist Bob Parks: his outrageous performances, his fall from grace, his complex relationships, his fight for recognition and the tragedy that goes on to remake his career. 1971, the Los Angeles performance art scene is flourishing. Chris Burden has just ordered a studio assistant to shoot him in the left arm with a rifle, Barbara T Smith is staging provocative interventions at F-Space and Paul McCarthy is painting his naked body with mustard and ketchup in the name of art. Among them all, Bob Parks: an energetic young artist from the UK, living with his beautiful and interesting San Fransiscan wife, Myriam Morales. Life is perfect, for a time. But when Bob’s marriage fails, and Myriam leaves for Santa Fe, things fall apart. He walks the streets of Los Angeles for a year in a string bikini and sees his burgeoning art career come to pieces. Having been rescued by the parishioners of a South Central gospel church and having spent six years worshipping and singing alongside them, Bob finally moves back to the UK to live with his parents in the New Forest. Despite planning to stay for only six months to finish a series of paintings and gather his thoughts, Bob stays for thirty years. We meet him as he continues to develop his art practice, continues to sing in a gospel church and continues to explore what he calls “the R&B feeling”. Against this backdrop, Bob attempts to break free of a constraining and mutually dependent relationship with his mother, Miggie, whose health is failing. As time goes on Bob’s obsession with his mother – and her impending death – deepens, before reaching a terrible and tragic conclusion. The film contains nudity and scenes which some viewers may find disturbing. Not suitable for children. In this workshop Alec Christie will detail how scripts can be analysed and processed to ensure you have an adequate budget and schedule. Alec will focus on:

![]() Frankenweenie - Kids' Club Halloween Dress-Up Special
Director: Tim Burton 87 mins Classification: PG In 1984, just prior to his first feature, PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE, Tim Burton made a short film about young Victor, his homemade horror movies and his dog Sparky. Twenty-eight years on, Burton resurrected it as a full-length animation, voiced by Charlie Tahan (I AM LEGEND’s Ethan) as Victor, along with suitably horrific luminaries Martin Landau, Christopher Lee, and Burton regular Winona Ryder (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, BEETLEJUICE). Injured by a speeding car, poor Sparky is restored to health by Victor in the only way he knows how. But now sporting a bolt through his neck, the dog has mutated into a right little monster, and Victor has his work cut out to convince his terrified neighbours that Sparky means them no harm. Employing 3D and stop-motion techniques, FRANKENWEENIE is Burton’s wonderfully boisterous return to animation following 2005’s CORPSE BRIDE. Visit www.picturehouses.com to book tickets in advance. |

From Me to Me: Directing Workshop by Patrick Tucker
After Patrick Tucker's first shoot during his initial training course at the BBC in 1976, he was so annoyed at not being absolutely wonderful that he wrote a rude letter to himself, outlining all his mistakes and faults! Finding this a valuable exercise for self-improvement, Patrick has done this subsequently after every shoot he has completed. These notes form the basis of his popular workshop From Me to Me, a course that he has taught around the world. The workshop is based on very real insights from the practical world of directing - this is far from just theory! During this workshop Patrick will encourage participants to join him to demonstrate various aspects of the craft of directing, as well as that of screen acting. He will include examples from films and television shows that he has directed. About Patrick Tucker Patrick Tucker is an established stage and screen director with over 150 screen drama credits and 100 stage credits. Patrick has taught directing and acting workshops for numerous years, including a 10-year stretch for Raindance. In 1991 Patrick founded the Original Shakespeare Company. He has authored seven books including The Actor's Survival Handbook and Secrets of Screen Acting. If you have also booked to attend the Alec Christie Producing workshop on Saturday 31 October we are delighted to offer a discount of this event's ticket. Please select the £20 ticket option if you have also booked for Alec Christie. We're pleased to announce that students may book tickets for £15. Visit https://www.eventbrite.co.uk to book tickets. |

![]() La Passion de Jeanne D'Arc and Orlando Consort Choir
Director: Carl Theodor Dreyer Language: Silent (with live accompaniment by the Orlando Consort Choir). 82 mins Classification: PG When Carl Dreyer’s La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc was released in 1928 it caused a minor scandal. Condemned unseen in France, vilified by Catholic authorities, and even banned in England for its depiction of English soldiers, it is now recognised as a cinematic masterpiece, regularly appearing in lists of the top ten greatest ever films and featuring what is generally accepted as one of the finest performances on film, by Renée Jeanne Falconetti in the title role. The superb Orlando Consort provide live accompaniment for this silent classic with an original medieval score, bringing the sound of the fifteenth century to life. About La Passion de Jeanne D'Arc: A classic of the silent age, this film tells the story of the doomed but ultimately canonized 15th-century teenage warrior. On trial for claiming she'd spoken to God, Jeanne d'Arc (Renee Falconetti) is subjected to inhumane treatment and scare tactics at the hands of church court officials (Eugene Silvain, Andre Berley). Initially bullied into changing her story, Jeanne eventually opts for what she sees as the truth. Her punishment, a famously brutal execution, earns her perpetual martyrdom. Malcolm McLaren Night!
PLEASE NOTE THE CONFIRMED START TIME FOR THIS EVENT IS 7PM To coincide with the exhibition Eyes for Blowing up Bridges, currently showing at the John Hansard Gallery, Malcolm McLaren Night will give the unique opportunity to watch two films made by Malcolm McLaren which reflect his life-long obsession with art, music, fashion and pop culture. A provocative and at times controversial figure, McLaren’s influence throughout the 1970s and beyond cannot be underestimated. From his management of bands such as Sex Pistols, New York Dolls, Adam and the Ants, Bow Wow Wow, and the creation of SEX (the shop he established in the King’s Road with Vivienne Westwood in the early 1970s), McLaren continued to be an incredible innovator who went onto experiment with new musical forms in the early 1980s. His seminal album Duck Rock in 1983 was a pivotal moment that brought hip-hop to a much wider audience and paved the way for much of the experimental mixing of musical styles that were so influential in the 1980s. The two films that are being shown as part of Malcolm McLaren Night are Paris and Duck Rock. Both are fantastic examples of his maverick style of mixing and reshaping existing material into new and exciting experiences. The evening will be introduced by Paul Gorman, co-curator with David Thorp of Eyes for Blowing up Bridges. Gorman is a writer, journalist and social commentator who knew Malcolm McLaren well and is currently working on a Malcolm McLaren biography. His past books, writings and curatorial projects have centred on pop culture, fashion and music, including: The Look: Adventures in Pop & Rock Fashion, and book collaborations with Goldie, UB40 and Boy George. He has published extensively on the radical graphic artist Barney Bubbles, edited and created the format for the exhaustive Any Day Now: David Bowie The London Years, and has most recently edited the Thames and Hudson artist monograph Derek Boshier: Re-think/Re-Entry. At 10pm, after Paul Gorman's talk and the screening of Paris and Duck Rock, why not stay on or join us for a free screening of The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. Malcolm McLaren Night is presented by John Hansard Gallery, City Eye and the Malcolm McLaren Estate, in association with The Stage Door. Visit https://www.eventbrite.co.uk to book tickets. |

Macario
Director: Roberto Gavaldón Language: Spanish 91 mins The life of poor, hungry peasant Macario changes when his wife cooks a turkey for him on the Day of the Dead and the Devil, God, and Death try to join the feast. This wonderful classic is The Phoenix Film Society's contribution to University of Southampton's Mexico Week. Rodrigo Ortiz-Vázquez from the university’s Archaeology Deptartment will give a talk about Mexico’s Day of the Dead. Details of the talk: Mexico has enormous cultural diversity, partly due to its size, and also the legacy of both pre-Colombian cultures and Spanish colonisation. One manifestation of this is the national celebration of the Day of the Dead on 2nd November. Old traditions have been moulded into vivid expressions of how society deals with death by designating a day to remember ancestors. This had led to numerous ways of adapting this celebration with different rituals, music, dress, offerings and craftsmanship, carried out by individuals, families, neighbourhoods, towns and even entire cities. Roberto Gavaldón’s film Macario is an artistic expression from the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, which shows part of this diversity, as he captures how a small town’s society in ‘New Spain’ (modern Mexico) deals with death framed by its religious beliefs. www.thephoenix.org.uk |

![]() Listen To Me Marlon
Director: Stevan Riley 98 mins Classification: 15 Famously taciturn throughout his life and even a recluse in his later years, Marlon Brando nevertheless kept an intensely personal audio diary comprising many hours of intimate reflections and recollections over several decades. Access to these cassette recordings has provided renowned documentarian Stevan Riley (FIRE IN BABYLON, EVERYTHING OR NOTHING) with a unique opportunity. Sometimes using an eerily animated 3D scan of Brando’s head, the film allows us to hear Brando talking about his childhood and adolescence, the development of his acting technique and, particularly revealingly, his troubled and often tragic family relationships. Riley also tracked down every TV interview Brando ever gave and includes clips from many of these, plus footage of him rehearsing and talking – cagily or flirtatiously – with reporters. The result is certainly the most fascinating and rounded portrait ever offered of this 20th-century screen legend. Visit www.picturehouses.com to book tickets in advance. |

Making Webseries That Work
Years ago, filmmakers' traditional career-path was to make several short films and hope they were screened by festivals, before moving on to features or television. However, the internet has given indie filmmakers a whole new opportunity to showcase their work and be discovered. But where do you start? What makes a good webseries? How do you build an audience? And with three hundred hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute, how on earth do you stand out? Lisa Gifford wrote and directed the web series 3some, which now has over 3.5m views across multiple online platforms. She won the 2014 Indie Series Award for Best Drama Writing and is now a working writer and director, with television and feature film projects in development. In this talk, Lisa will explain the basics of web series creation and give her advice on how to get your series noticed by the people who count. Black: Celebrating The 20th Anniversary of
The Million Man March The 16th October 2015 was the 20th Anniversary of the Million Man March to Washington DC which symbolised the response to the condition of black men in the USA at that time, and resonated with the condition of black men all over the world. This moment in time is recognised through the release of a short film that celebrates this event. The film also resonates with the spate of deaths of black men in the USA more recently, the over representation of black men in the UK criminal justice system and the high numbers of Black people featured in stop and search figures in Hampshire. The film features over 30 black men from the Southampton area who formed a choir and assembled in a studio in the city; together with a multi racial funk band of local musicians to play live James Brown's Papa Don't Take No Mess. This was all filmed and the first showing of this film which resulted took place at The Stage Door on 16 October as part of Black History Month. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with The Film's director and producer Don John. www.donjohn.co.uk Visit www.eventbrite.co.uk/ to book tickets |

Making a Scene Showcase
Southampton Film Week and City Eye is thrilled to include this showcase of Making a Scene's film work in the SFW15 programme. Making a Scene is a Creative arts group which has naturally developed activity from that focused on only drama to so much more! Over quite a few years City Eye has worked with MAS to support the introduction of film work into its activities - sharing technical knowledge and skill, exploring creativity and producing films in documentary, drama, and artists moving image genres. Following a project focused on technical and soft-skills development in 2013 City Eye was pleased to support the group's application for Community funding in order to buy its own equipment and produce a short film. Group members set their targets high and promised to complete a film for inclusion into Southampton Film Week. We are delighted that working independently the group has achieved their goal - twice over! This short showcase includes Labelled and Mass Psychosis each of which was completed in 2015. 'Labelled' is a little look into the lives and thoughts of just four Making a Scene members, all if whom have experienced mental health problems. The whole group, including members unseen in the film, came up with the idea for the film, the questions and the opening and closing scenes. The responses to direct questions are unrehearsed, honest & each individual's personal experience or opinion at the time of filming. We don't claim to speak for everyone with a mental health problem, we have just spoken from the heart and hope that this film inspires conversations and sparks an interest to learn more about mental health. 'Mass Psychosis' is a short film using fact, fiction and historical inaccuracies to explore possibilities. This film does contain flashing images, flickering film footage and one, yes just the one loud noise! We hope you enjoy these two very different films, as much as we enjoyed making them. Aside from its own creative output Making a Scene is involved in designing and delivering training, campaigning, raising public awareness through creativity rather than confrontation, promoting and developing service user involvement and promoting mental and physical well being and personal development. EYES FOR BLOWING UP BRIDGES: Joining the dots from the Situationist International to Malcolm McLaren
26 September 2015 - 14 November 2015 From Situationism to Beat to Punk, Eyes For Blowing Up Bridges unites a group of remarkable radical artists, poets, writers and activists who initiated, perpetrated and influenced a range of seminal post-war alternative movements. Presenting rarely exhibited material – including cut-ups, film, video, sound and slide, as well as self-published books, pamphlets, anarchist propaganda, punk ephemera and graphics – the exhibition examines the creative interplay between William Burroughs, Guy Debord, Asger Jorn, Alexander Trocchi and King Mob, and their collective influence on Malcolm McLaren in his endeavours to disrupt the cultural and social status quo from the 1960s to his premature death in 2010. Malcolm McLaren co-opted the intellectual vigour of this powerful and difficult group of individuals to make insurrectionary statements during his days as a Situationist art student in the 1960s, to the end of his life in groundbreaking artistic forays expressed through pop culture (fashion, music, environment, performance, film). Having repudiated painting as a bourgeois form of expression like Asger Jorn before him, McLaren’s lifelong work was inspired by such Situationist techniques as détournement (the juxtaposition of pre-existing elements), Burroughs’ ‘cut-ups’, and Debord’s emphasis on the staging of situations “that bring a revolutionary reordering of life, politics and art”. Eyes For Blowing Up Bridges will present representations of the “defiguration” paintings exhibited by Jorn in the early 1960s, alongside the detourned comic strips of the Situationist International’s literature and Debord’s cinematic masterpiece, The Society Of The Spectacle. McLaren resurrected slogans associated with radical group King Mob, and their commentary on the banalisation of everyday life by the consumer society in the late 1960s. He also lifted text from the porn novels Alexander Trocchi wrote for the Olympia Press in the preceding decade. Original volumes of the revolutionary group’s King Mob Echo will be on display in the exhibition, which will also highlight the links between Trocchi’s book Helen And Desire and McLaren’s t-shirts design entitled ‘I Groaned With Pain’. Original volumes of the revolutionary group King Mob's Echo will be on display, along with McLaren's tribute to Debord et al with the film installations Shallow 1-21 and Paris, Capital of the XXIst Century. The exhibition features the first UK public display of representations of McLaren’s student work from Goldsmiths College, along with material from the Malcolm McLaren Estate archive, including notes, sketches, and personal items. The title of the exhibition is derived from the phrase, “de beaux yeux pour faire sauter des ponts”, taken from correspondence between Guy Debord and his friend Hervé Falcou, 1949-53. Eyes For Blowing Up Bridges is a John Hansard Gallery exhibition curated by David Thorp and Paul Gorman. With special thanks to the Malcolm McLaren Estate. hansardgallery.org.uk |
